Facilities
Making the best of the home we have
Gleaners Food Bank is located in an 83,000-square-foot structure on East 16th Street in Indianapolis.
While Gleaners and our friends in the community work toward a new home that fits our needs and capabilities, our staff and volunteers are making the best use of our current facility.
But the building’s age and layout present daily challenges.
The challenges
The roof is in need of expensive repairs. The electrical system was designed for a different era, as were the heating and cooling systems. These systems are also costly to repair, and they lack modern energy efficiencies.
In general, the facility is just too old and too small to meet our modern needs. It’s comprised of interlocking buildings, the oldest of which was built in the 1880s. Varying floor heights make it impossible to move grocery products efficiently.
Our financial resources are precious—and we’re forced to spend too much of them on an inefficient structure. Gleaners needs a new place from which we can combat hunger more effectively.
Until then, we continue that fight in our current building—challenges and all.
