As the sluggish and uncertain economy puts a strain on Indiana’s families, the need for food assistance continues to grow.
The Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Foundation announced a donation of $90,000 to Gleaners Food Bank to help combat the hunger and malnutrition facing an estimated 200,000 Hoosiers in 21 counties across central and southeastern Indiana.
“We are committed to improving the health of the community that has been Anthem’s home for more than 60 years,” said Robert W. Hillman, president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield in Indiana. “Our company mission calls us to address the food insecurity and hunger confronting thousands of our fellow Hoosiers. Nothing poses a more fundamental threat to Indiana’s health and well being. Anthem and its 5,000 associates in Indiana are proud to continue our longstanding support for the work of Gleaners and its network of hunger relief partners.”
With Anthem’s donation, Gleaners will be able to expand its Retail Store Donation Program to secure an additional 1.5 million pounds of nutritious food for hungry Hoosiers in 21 Indiana counties. “This magnificent gift will help us collect additional life-sustaining food for the growing numbers of families who struggle to put food on their tables,” stated Carrie Petty, Chair-Elect of Gleaners Board of Directors. “We are deeply grateful for Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s partnership in the fight against hunger.”
