Aunt Millie’s to donate 3,600 loaves of bread to Indianapolis’ Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana

Fort Wayne, Indiana: Aunt Millie’s will donate 3,600 loaves of Butter Top Wheat Bread to Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana in Indianapolis on December 10, 2009*. The bread will be delivered fresh to Gleaners Food Bank for distribution to those in need this holiday season.
 
“At Gleaners, we are proud of our association with organizations such as Aunt Millie’s who help us feed those in need,” says Pamela Altmeyer-Alvery, president and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. “We’re grateful for their generosity and proud of the commitment we share.”
 
Since its humble beginning in an Indianapolis garage in 1980, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana has distributed more than 230 million pounds of food. Today, the charitable organization distributes more than 16 million pounds of food each year through more than 400 hunger-relief organizations. Gleaners Food Bank serves thousands of Hoosier families, seniors and children in 21 central Indiana counties.
 
Hunger and poverty are growing in central Indiana where 213,000 Hoosiers, including over 83,000 children now live in poverty. This year, 36% more people need food assistance over last year. The recent national economic crisis has hit elderly people, the working poor and hungry children especially hard. In 2008 alone, calls for food assistance were up 41%.
 
In all, Aunt Millie’s will donate 57,600 loaves of bread this holiday season – over 1,000 loaves per day – to food banks throughout the Midwest. The retail value of the donation is $11,484 in central Indiana, and $183,744 total for the Midwest.
