Indianapolis, IN — In April 2010 Gleaners Food Bank publicly announced an ambitious $11.6 million capital campaign – only our second capital campaign since we were founded over 30 years ago. Today it was announced that Gleaners has raised $12,296,035 and are in the process of closing out our campaign.

The campaign total includes the latest gift of $250,000 from the Indiana Pacers and Herb Simon. Jim Morris, volunteer Campaign Chair and President of Pacers Sports and Entertainment announced this gift during a basketball game with the Dallas Mavericks.

“The Indiana Pacers and Herb Simon are delighted to support such an important charity like Gleaners Food Bank” Morris stated. “Last year they provided the equivalent of 19.5 million meals to help feed over 160,000 youngsters, families, and seniors in central Indiana. We believe in being a strong supporter of our community and are proud to make this gift to help improve the lives of so many people who are in need” he added.

Honorary Co-chair Senator Richard Lugar stated “I have been honored to help with this effort in a small way. Gleaners serves so many individuals and families in need. I am proud to have assisted them with this important effort” he added.

A large number of volunteers from throughout the community have been assisting with The Campaign For Gleaners. A “Blue Ribbon Committee” consisting of nearly four-dozen community leaders has been involved in planning and fundraising since 2008.

Carrie Petty, Gleaners Board Chair stated that “we are grateful for the leadership and support that we have received from Jim Morris as chair of the Capital Campaign and from a Blue Ribbon Committee that he recruited to help raise funds. They have given generously of their time, talents and precious financial resources. I know our new facility will allow Gleaners to fulfill its mission to bring food and hope into the lives of our neighbors everyday with the belief that one day we will eliminate hunger here in our community.”

The Campaign For Gleaners has received nearly 8,500 pledges to the campaign including 16 pledges of $100,000 or more. These large donors include: The R.B. Annis Educational Foundation, Chase Bank, Deem LLC, Defender Direct, Eli Lilly & Company, Efroymson Family Fund, The Indianapolis Foundation, IPL, The Kroger Company, Lilly Endowment Inc., MacAllister Machinery, M&I Bank, the Rotary Club of Indianapolis, Samerian Foundation, Second Presbyterian Church, Melvin and Bren Simon, Star Media, and the anonymous gifts from individuals.

The Campaign For Gleaners has allowed us to purchase and re-locate to a 297,000 square foot food warehouse located near the Indianapolis Airport. Our new facility has over three times the floor space of the antiquated and undersized former warehouse.

Located at 3737 Waldemere Avenue, the 17-acre site is just east of I-465 on the southwest side of Indianapolis and just north of Kentucky and Hanna Avenues. The site gives ready access and provides ample parking for employees and volunteers.

Hunger statistics show a continuing crisis in Indiana. One of every four children in Marion County is living in poverty. Eight out of ten students in Indianapolis Public Schools are receiving free or reduced-cost lunches.

Gleaners partners with over 350 charities including: emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, homeless shelters, shelters for battered women and children, day care centers, senior centers, residential care centers, and youth programs in a 21-county service area in Central and Southeastern Indiana.

Cindy Hubert, President and CEO of Gleaners stated, “We are in the process of wrapping up the campaign and plan to close out this effort within the next 60 days. We still have some major equipment needs, endowment goals, and other initiatives which have not been fully funded by The Campaign For Gleaners. We are humbly grateful for the support of so many individual donors, families, companies, service organizations, and foundations throughout the communities we serve, which will allow Gleaners to continue to serve hungry Hoosiers throughout central and southeastern Indiana for decades to come.”
