Stuff the Bus! More than a food drive!
"Wayne Township School Corporation’s Food Service Director, Sara Gasiorowski, hosted a food drive and fundraiser for Gleaners Food Bank. Students and their families gathered inside the auditorium of Ben Davis High School to hear performances from the Junior High and High School Show Choirs. As a special treat, the Purduette Choir from Purdue University performed for everyone. This night wasn’t just about the considerable musical talent in the room. Instead, the focus of the event was on hunger. Many children and their families are chronically hungry in Wayne Township.
In Fact, Wayne Township receives 538 BackSacks per week at Chapelwood, Garden City, Maplewood, Rhoades, and Stout Field. Additionally, Chapelwood Elementary has a food pantry that serves hundreds of people per month. Wayne Township is committed to helping alleviate childhood hunger in their community. A part of the choir event at Ben Davis was a food drive called, “Stuff the Bus”. Students in the township were encouraged to donate non-perishable food items to Gleaners Food Bank by putting their donation inside a school bus. This food drive raised nearly 3,000 pounds of food that was ear marked to serve Gleaners School-Based Pantries.
I can honestly tell you, speaking onstage at this event was one of the most uplifting and exciting things I have been able to do. Being able to see a school corporation give back to the families in need in their community was incredible. What was more exciting is the hope and joy that this fundraiser brought to the students, many of whom probably receive services from Gleaners. I think that many people left the event with a better sense of the need in their communities and also about the impact of their actions. That night, every donation added up to something more than the sum of its parts. It became hope, community, and service. This truly was an amazing event."
