Indianapolis, IN (June 20, 2013) — Thanks to the generosity of The Hussman Foundation and a matching grant from the ExactTarget Foundation, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana has added a second Mobile Pantry truck to its fleet. This new refrigerated vehicle will allow Gleaners Food Bank to provide an additional million meals to hungry families throughout its 21-county service area in central and southeastern Indiana.

Gleaners’ Mobile Pantry program is designed to extend hunger relief to geographic areas where there are either not enough food pantries to meet the need of the community or where it is difficult for area residents to access a local food pantry. In an average Mobile Pantry distribution, the “food pantry on wheels” can distribute up to five tons of food to an average of 200 families in a two-hour time period.

“We are honored to partner with the Hussman Foundation and ExactTarget Foundation to help reduce hunger in our communities,” said Cindy Hubert, President and CEO of Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana. “The second mobile pantry will significantly increase our ability to deliver food to central and southeastern Indiana communities that have little or no access to traditional food pantries,”

On June 10, Feeding America released “Map the Meal Gap 2013” a study conducted by Dr. Craig Gundersen, one of the world’s leading authorities on food insecurity. The study found that 319,450 people in Gleaners Food Bank’s 21-county service area—including 103,800 children – do not always know where they will find their next meal. In all, nearly one out of every six people central and southeastern Indiana struggles with hunger. Thanks to the generosity of The Hussman Foundation, secured through Feeding America, and the ExactTarget Foundation, thousands of hungry Hoosier families will receive the food assistance they need.
