Indianapolis, Ind. (August 12, 2013)… Two Mobile Pantry trucks from Gleaners Food Bank rolled into Connersville on Saturday morning August 3rd, setting up at the Courthouse downtown, as part of a community outreach to help residents in need with food assistance. Community partners including Great Clips, Kroger, Walmart, Fayette Regional Health and FSSA joined Gleaners to make the Mobile Pantry distribution a community event.
Gleaners brings the Mobile Pantry truck to Connersville twice a month to help provide food assistance to those in need. In an effort to help lessen the burden of sending children back to school and the additional costs often associated with that, Gleaners engaged local community partners for an outreach event which served 267 households in just over two hours.
Fayette County has the highest food insecurity rate among children in the state at 27.9%, over 1,600 children are unsure of where their next meal is coming from according to Feeding America’s 2011 Map the Meal Gap. In addition, food insecurity overall is 18.2% or 4,420 residents in the county. The need is great and Gleaners Food Bank along with our partner agencies are committed to helping provide food and resources to Fayette County.
Generous local partners brought many back to school resources to those attending. Great Clips set up a salon station and provided free haircuts to children 10 and under along with discount coupons for students and adults. Fayette Regional Health representatives were on hand offering free vital checks to adults and giving the children a peek inside the ambulance to satisfy their curious minds. Family and Social Services Administration distributed information to help those in need connect with much needed resources. Special gifts for the children came in the form of school supplies from the Kroger Co. and Walmart in Connersville.
Gleaners relies on dedicated and passionate volunteers each month to help bring the Mobile Pantry Program successfully to communities, they are vital to Gleaners’ ability to reach and serve those facing hunger. Special thanks to the Fayette School Corporation staff and teachers, Connersville Baptist Temple, Grace United Methodist Church and many others who took their Saturday morning to come out and serve their community.
If you are in need of food assistance, the Mobile Pantry distributes from 4-6pm the fourth Wednesday of each month at Robert’s Park and the second Thursday each month at Connersville Baptist Temple. No IDs are required, please bring your own bags or box.
