David and Debbie have been volunteering with Gleaners since 2013. To date, they have over 1,000 hours of volunteer service between them. David helps out in our on-site food pantry each week by stocking shelves and assisting clients with food selection. Debbie helps with data entry for the Volunteer department.
We caught up with them both and asked what inspires them about volunteering.
How did you get involved?
David said that he had heard of Gleaners and volunteering was something he wanted to do when he retired. At first he was volunteering twice a week, bringing his wife Debbie, to occasionally help out in the pantry. Together, they now both regularly come to volunteer once a week.
What is your favorite part of volunteering?
They both mentioned that they like the people they work with. David noted that he has met other volunteers who are now good friends. He can tell the people we serve are happy to be able to be here at the pantry. He's happy to be able to help give back a little extra.
What does Gleaners mean to you?
To Debbie and David, Gleaners is an organization that is aware and cares about the people that struggle to put food on the table.
David and Debbie have gotten more involved with Gleaners over the years and now help host a golf tournament in October to raise funds for the CHH Community Cupboard. This year will be the 5th year for the tournament. Last year, the tournament raised 30,000 meals for Hoosiers in our community.
