INDIANAPOLIS – Gleaners Food Bank has received a 4-Star rating from Charity Navigator, recognizing Gleaners’ commitment to fiscal management, accountability and transparency. Charity Navigator is an independent charity evaluator of financial health and responsibility of nonprofits across the country. The 4-Star rating is the highest classification given by Charity Navigator.

A nonprofit must demonstrate best practices in ethical operation in addition to openness and governance. Gleaners Food Bank has received the 4-Star rating for six consecutive years, an accomplishment achieved by only 3 percent of nonprofits evaluated by Charity Navigator.

“Gleaners takes great pride in the work we are able to do with the donations from individuals and businesses. We are honored to receive the Charity Navigator 4-Star rating for the sixth year in a row because it provides our donors with a confidence that when they donate their hard earned dollars, they are making truly making a difference in the lives of our neighbors struggling with hunger,” stated Cynthia Hubert, President & CEO.

Gleaners will provide 30 million meals this year across its 21 county service area, meals for kids, seniors and working families that need a little extra help. Feeding America estimates that 1 in 8 Hoosiers are struggling with hunger in central and southeast Indiana – including 113,560 children. The organization is fighting record-breaking need for food assistance by continually expanding programs and finding new ways to get food in the hands of the hungry. Ninety-five percent of donations directly support programs such as BackSacks: Weekend Food for Kids, Mobile Pantry program, and Senior Shopping days.

“I can tell you countless stories of children who go hungry after school or seniors who must choose between paying for medicine and eating a proper meal, but the truth is that we are all surrounded by stories of hunger. There is not one neighborhood or city that is exempt from this problem,” said Hubert. “To end hunger we will all need to get involved.”
