Gleaners Sees An Impact As Retail Donations Decline

We are at a crisis point during our busiest time of the year. Marsh store closings have had an impact and retail donations are down across the board. As retail business models become more efficient, there is less excess food for stores to donate. What that means for Gleaners, is that we have an urgent need to purchase food to support our programs. CARE Mobile pantries are seeing an increase of more than 100 households at each of our six Indianapolis distribution sites on a weekly basis. In order to meet the needs for this program alone, an additional $100,000 of food must be purchased immediately.

In addition to the CARE program, we still must meet the needs of our agency partners, our other mobile pantries, our summer meal programs and other initiatives. We can purchase food much more efficiently than we can receive, inspect, sort, store, pick and distribute donated food. $1 will buy the retail equivalent of about $9 of food. That means for just $10, nearly $90 of food can be purchased and distributed.

Our cupboard is nearly bare. Please give today.
