From the President and CEO: Gratitude and Growth

In November, I wrote about a “True Holiday Hero,” my grandfather who secretly helped a family who’d lost everything in a Christmastime fire.

I didn’t know Gleaners was about to get help from many more true holiday heroes – friends like you who came through when we reported a shortfall in donations. Because of you, we ended the last quarter of 2016 a few percentage points ahead of budget. The best gift we could’ve imagined! – and we’ll turn your donation into the gift of food for others.

Your help is growing new programs and expanding existing ones to meet urgent needs. Our CARE mobile program is just one example. The partnership with Indy first responders to feed thousands more people in at-risk neighborhoods started even before we knew how we’d pay for it. The need was pressing. Yes, it was a leap of faith, but donors came through. Now, the effort has been expanded to year-round!

Gleaners’ 2017 goals include offering hungry neighbors throughout our 21 county service area more fresh produce and more health-related services. Medical referrals, eye exams, and flu shots are some of the possibilities of what we may be offering kids and adults in most need.

We’re ready to grow, because of you – our true hero. Your generosity has never meant more. Our gratitude has never been greater.
