RED NOSE DAY AND FEEDING AMERICA HELP SUPPORT HOOSIER CHILDREN

Thanks to a generous grant of $10,000 provided by the Red Nose Day Fund and Feeding America, Hoosier children in central and southeast Indiana will be provided with food through Gleaners Youth Programs: BackSacks, Summer Meals for Kids, and School-Based Pantries. The grant will provide critical sustaining support to the 1 in 5 food insecure children in our service area.

We took a moment to speak to staff members about how this food has impacted their school and their students. Here is what they had to say.

BACKSACKS: THOMPSON CROSSING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

Winter Break is not always exciting for my students--especially the ones who may have to go two weeks without a meal. To be able to provide a bag of food for a kid the day before break is amazing. I can see how relieved the students are to get food and to not have to worry about it. They can just be kids and not worry about when their next meal will be. This program is very special in our school.

SCHOOL-BASED PANTRY: SENSE CHARTER SCHOOL

There they were. Our families waiting patiently until our pantry opened. Outside. In freezing temps. Often with no more than a hoodie against the cold. We had a record amount of families shop our pantry right before the school's winter break. Because they knew their children would be home for a week and a half. No free breakfast and lunch that the school provides them on a regular basis. They knew that they needed to stock-up to help carry them over until school opened again. But then after the break we had a couple of snow days. Families showed up at the school for emergency food and I did home visits with food deliveries to families in need who were otherwise without transportation. School closures no longer mean to me a day that I can stay home from school and drink hot tea and watch old movies. My first thoughts are now - are my kiddos being fed and are they keeping warm? Gleaners provides resources to help us ensure their well-being. Come whatever season or weather.

SUMMER MEALS FOR KIDS

A mother told us that if the kids didn’t get these bags this week, all they had to eat was bologna for the rest of the weekend. I had anywhere from 3 to 5 children each week that thanked us for the apples and oranges, because they never had any fresh fruit at home.
