Winter Break is not always exciting for my students--especially the ones who may have to go two weeks without a meal. To be able to provide a bag of food for a kid the day before break is amazing. I can see how relieved the students are to get food and to not have to worry about it. They can just be kids and not worry about when their next meal will be. This program is very special in our school.
There they were. Our families waiting patiently until our pantry opened. Outside. In freezing temps. Often with no more than a hoodie against the cold. We had a record amount of families shop our pantry right before the school's winter break. Because they knew their children would be home for a week and a half. No free breakfast and lunch that the school provides them on a regular basis. They knew that they needed to stock-up to help carry them over until school opened again. But then after the break we had a couple of snow days. Families showed up at the school for emergency food and I did home visits with food deliveries to families in need who were otherwise without transportation. School closures no longer mean to me a day that I can stay home from school and drink hot tea and watch old movies. My first thoughts are now - are my kiddos being fed and are they keeping warm? Gleaners provides resources to help us ensure their well-being. Come whatever season or weather.
