The month of May was Older American’s Month. Throughout the month of May and every month Gleaners is thinking about senior citizens and how we can best serve their needs!
A unique pilot program grew out of a Feeding America Health grant and found its way to the perfect opportunity through a partnership with Pecar Health Clinic and the Crooked Creek Food Pantry. These two organizations find themselves not only under the same roof but, next door to each other, providing wellness together.
The objective of the pilot program was to start a shopping day at the food pantry for seniors age 55 and over in an effort to provide additional food resources to a generation facing health and wellness issues on an accelerated scale. A nutritional referral slip was put into use by the Pecar Clinic so that Doctors and other health care professionals could refer their clients to Crooked Creek Food Pantry if they felt the patient could benefit from access to nutritional foods. The first Senior Shopping Day was launched in January, 2017 and served 36 households… in February, 136 households.
Just the facts:
- 80% stated that they do not always have enough money to buy the food they need
- 44% eat fewer than two meals a day
- 63% eat alone
- 87% scored as being at a “High Health Risk”
Goals: We want to decrease the high health risk score by doing the following:
- Offer access to more fresh produce
- Increase referrals from the clinic
- Provide an additional shopping day
Three months after opening, Crooked Creek moved to offering two Senior Shopping Days a month in March in an effort to balance the number of households attending and the impact on the food pantry. Clients were still eligible to shop the food pantry one other time per month in addition to the Senior Shopping Day.
In March we resurveyed clients and found the following:
- 69% stated that they do not always have enough money to buy the food they need
- 15% eat fewer than two meals a day
- 57% eat alone
- 76% scored as being at a “High Health Risk”
The pilot program ends in June for the program with Pecar Health Clinic and the Crooked Creek Food Pantry but, it is our hope that it will continue along with our other senior programs through your support. We are honored to be able to offer ten Senior Mobiles and nine Senior Shopping Days which operate each month throughout Gleaners’ service area.
