As we enter the holiday season, we are mindful that more people than ever before are in line at our mobile pantries and at our own Cynthia H. Hubert Community Cupboard.
On a particularly busy Senior Shopping Day in November, a handful of staff helped out over lunch time. There were about 100 more seniors than on a typical day, and the volunteer shift ended at Noon. Our pantry manager was momentarily short-handed.
A client approached one of our staff who was working the check in desk and quietly said “I just want you to know when you go to bed at night that what you do here is wonderful work. I’d be hungry most nights if it wasn’t for Gleaners. I have to come here to get food that will last me half the month and I’m so thankful to all of you. This means so much to me and my family.” She was in her 60’s and had three others in her household: a 36 year old and two teenagers.
