Don is a proud Army veteran who visits the Community Cupboard. After serving our country in Vietnam, he thought the worst was behind him. Then came a crippling back injury at work.

“I had to find a way to feed my family,” said Don. He and his wife have been married for 30 years. Their daughter, son-in-law and young granddaughter also live in the home. “Coming here means we know our little granddaughter won’t go hungry. It has given us one less thing to worry about.”

Don and his wife visit the Community Cupboard and hope for fruits and vegetables and special treats such as animal crackers that are costly at a grocery. “Once we see what we can get at Gleaners, then we go to the grocery and fill out what we need with what we can afford.”

As they walked to their car, Don’s granddaughter clutched a box of animal crackers and eyed a container of strawberries. He turned and smiled. “I don’t think she’s ever tasted a strawberry. She thinks the animal crackers are the best. Wait until she tastes that berry!”

Getting enough to eat is a battle our military families don't deserve to face.

Help Gleaners make sure those who've given up so much already - and their families - need not face the daily hardship of hunger.
