For some, the end of a school year means no more grades or homework. For too many in our community though, summertime also means the end of guaranteed school meals.

Gleaners’ Community Action Relief Effort (CARE) Program introduced mobile pantries in Indianapolis to help curb summertime food insecurity in 2014. Since then, our summer mobile pantry program has been on the ground throughout Marion County, offering food and fresh produce, to neighbors living in areas where food may be hard to access.

This year, three locations provide mobile pantry services throughout June, July and August. Those locations and times are:

John Marshall High School
10101 E 38th St, Indianapolis, IN 46235
1st Mondays 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
3rd Saturdays 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

*Neighbors in cars should enter via Mitthoeffer Road.

75th and Shadeland, hosted by Castleton UMC
7427 N. Shadeland Ave. Indianapolis, IN 46250
Tuesdays 3 p.m. – 5 p.m.

Avondale Meadows YMCA
3908 Meadows Dr, Indianapolis, IN 46205
Wednesdays 12 – 2 p.m.
*There will be no distribution Wednesday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.

If you’ve ever been to the Gleaners onsite pantry in Indianapolis, expect a similar format for mobile pantry distributions.

You don’t need to provide an ID to get food at these sites. Just tell our staff how many households you’re getting food for, and they will write a number in erasable chalk on your car. Then, you’ll wait in line to get protein, fresh produce, and other meal-making foods from volunteers, without leaving your vehicle.

Gleaners’ mobile pantry units will be throughout Marion County in June, July and August.

Neighbors should note that the John Marshall location at 10101 E. 38th Street, near 38th and Mitthoeffer Road, also offers walk-up pantry distributions. These walk-up pantry distributions are only for those neighbors who are collecting their food via foot or bike. Parking on-site, gathering food, then driving away is not allowed in the walk-up line. Those collecting food from their cars should join the drive-up line via Mitthoeffer Road.

If you are walking up at John Marshall, make sure to check in with our staff beforehand to get bags for your produce. We have also seen neighbors bring suitcases or wagons to help carry the amount of food, which are allowed on site.

Fresh produce and meal-making items are available at the mobile pantry distributions.
