In a country that wastes approximately 72 billions of pounds of food each year, it’s almost shocking that anyone in America goes hungry. Yet, just here in Indiana nearly one million Hoosiers lack the meals they need to thrive. Not surprisingly, the foods our neighbors lack the most overwhelmingly consist of perishable food items such as fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, and meat.

Your support ensures we can continue to develop new and innovative ways to close this meal gap and lead the fight against hunger in our community. Join us in one of the following ways:

For many, a daily meal is a simple choice of what to eat. But for people facing hunger, a daily meal poses a very different type of choice. Our neighbors often face the impossible choice between food and other critical needs, such as electricity, childcare or medicine.

Every year, thousands of Hoosier families receive food from our gracious and compassionate volunteers. Thanks to their generously-given time and effort, we are able to provide approximately 130 meals to neighbors for every hour of time that is donated.

Volunteering is a great way to directly see the impact of your investment, and is a great employee engagement opportunity. Whether you prefer to volunteer in a group or as an individual, working with neighbors directly or staying behind the scenes – we have something for you! Amplifying the voices of our neighbors – sharing their stories, their challenges, their dreams – is critical to understanding food insecurity. A child who cannot rely on dinner at home is assured breakfast at school because of the School Breakfast Program. A working mother who is struggling to make ends meet knows she can get help to feed her family through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

But our federal programs are only as strong as the support they receive through legislation. As a Feeding America partner, Gleaners advocates both locally and nationally to protect and expand these vital programs to ensure that no one in America goes hungry.

Fighting food insecurity at a fundamental level requires an investment in innovative programs that focus on equitable access to highly nutritious foods that fuel our bodies to function at their best, both mentally and physically.
