During Hunger Action Month, Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana is highlighting a commitment that ensures the food neighbors receive is healthy food they can feel confident about taking home.

Gleaners’ Satisfaction Guarantee promises that food provided to neighbors and network partners will have a reasonable shelf life, when properly stored, and meet reasonable expectations for quality.

If it does not, Gleaners will promptly replace it.

Gleaners’ Satisfaction Guarantee helps ensure the healthiest, most nutritious food gets into the hands or our neighbors facing hunger.

The guarantee reflects our guiding principle that people facing hunger deserve the same quality and dignity anyone would expect when choosing food for themselves and their families.

Gleaners established the guarantee in 2025, alongside expanded investments in food safety and quality assurance throughout its operations. It is the first of its kind nationwide.

Gleaners also established a consumer complaint tracking system, increased monitoring of food retention dates and created regular internal quality assurance meetings.

Food safety measures extend throughout Gleaners’ operations. We monitor temperatures during receiving, storage, shipping and transportation and conduct daily environmental testing for potential contaminants. Our Protein Repack Center is inspected daily by an on-site U.S. Department of Agriculture inspector, and we also undergo inspections by the Indiana Department of Health and food safety audits by AIB International.

The Satisfaction Guarantee gives partners and neighbors a clear path when food does not meet expectations.

Neighbors who receive food directly from Gleaners, including through our drive-thru pantry, can return food that does not meet quality expectations for a replacement. Neighbors who receive food through a Gleaners network partner can report concerns to that organization, which can then work with Gleaners to address the issue.

Hunger Action Month is a time to raise awareness of hunger and the work happening every day to address it. It’s also an opportunity to consider how, together, we can do more.

At Gleaners, that work includes helping ensure neighbors have enough to eat and leveraging our resources to protect the safety and quality of the food that reaches their tables.
