Indianapolis Urban League President & CEO Tony Mason and Gleaners President & CEO Fred Glass shake hands at the grand opening of the Urban League's food pantry.

The Indianapolis Urban League (IUL) is now home to a new food pantry in downtown Indy. The organization debuted the food pantry Wednesday, Nov. 8. It partnered with Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana, Roche and Kroger to bring the pantry to life.

Gleaners and IUL have a history of working together to feed neighbors in need. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Gleaners helped IUL distribute meal boxes to the community that totaled 1.1 million pounds of food. After seeing the huge need firsthand, IUL decided they wanted to continue the relationship, and officially became a Gleaners network pantry in September 2021.

Initially, the Urban League food pantry will serve individuals who are in involved in IUL programs, but there is hope to expand it to public use in the future. In the meantime, IUL will continue to distribute food to the public in their drive-thru pantry once a month. The drive-thru pantry will be open on the second Tuesday of each month from 10 a.m. until noon.
